The Challenge

Close to 40% of Bangalore’s population live in slums or in the rural areas. The poor people in this area, own the land after inheriting it from their ancestors but live in dilapidated structures built using mud, wood, plant, strips of cloth and sheets. Most houses have gaping holes in them and are exposed to the elements and rodents. Family members live in one room where all the household activities are done. There is lack of ventilation, sunlight and are a great breeding ground for diseases. Open defecation is still practiced or families use common public toilets for their needs which are almost always in terrible condition. This living condition not only contributes to ill health, but also behavioural issues in their children who are exposed to their parents fights and sexual activity.

Our Intervention

We construct houses for the poorest of the poor or renovate crumbling structures to make them habitable. Our team of construction experts visit the site and provide a comprehensive plan that focuses on safety and hygiene. The inhabitants contribute 10% of the total cost that gives them a sense of dignity and ownership of their own homes. For homes that are in good condition but without toilets, we support the construction of hygienic toilets, especially when there are women in the family. We have currently constructed over 150+ houses with the support of Conferenza Episcopale Italiana and close to 200 toilets with the support of Kolping India.
